Hi Jean,

Benson was short lived. I think only 2 seasons. SOAP was so good that the ratings for Benson did not go so well

Hi Jean,

Yes I remember SOAP and I tried to watch it whenever I could. BENSON which was the spin off was pretty good too but SOAP was better

Hi Arthur,

You made a very good point that most of us never mentioned(including myself). Although there some quality NEW TV shows, for the most part TV(and especially sitcoms) have went down the toilet, daytime soap operas have ALWAYS been pathetic, but I got hooked on some nightime soaps like 'DALLAS' mentioned elsewhere in this club. I also got sucked into the sleazy nighttime soap 'Dynasty' the competition to 'Dallas'. So yes it is good to that tv in some ways is nothing more than 'moronic wallpaper' and this would include the news and sports as well.

Hmmm.

It seems that my early memories of television pre-date all of you and, of course, being in England at the time, nothing that I remember will mean a thing to Americans.

Initially television was a show-case for excellence. Many Shakespear dramas enacted by famous actors were among my favourite viewing along with some fantastic concerts including many D'oyle Carte and Gilbert and Sullivan presentations.

I well remember that television was treated as a particular kind of entertainment and we would be invited to 'tune in' at specific times.

Many films for interludes became extremely popular - the potters wheel being among the most famous.

Tiny screens were made 'larger' by huge magnifying glasses that stood on steel quadropods in front of the sets.

A television show was a special event and families like mine which could never dream of owning such a fabulous piece of equipment were invited to homes and clubs to enjoy the shows.

The very first set that I saw was at the YMCA and it had a horizontal screen that you looked at through a mirror.

Little did we know that cyclops (as it soon became known) was going to be the major cause of family disintegration and public disinformation.

I'm pleased to see you all looking back with fondness but how many of you can look back just that little bit further and nore comprehensively to see how a fantastic medium for entertainment and information has been downgraded to moronic wall paper.

Certainly you can all look back at what now seems to be an age of innosence.

Hi Jean,

Welcome to this group. Off the top of my head "Gunsmoke" comes to mind. I watched a LOT of westerns as a kid since my dad was a big John Wayne fan. I like JW but have seen the re-runs so many times now they got boring...LOL
